Erin Baumann, FoodCorps FoodCorp is part of AmeriCorps and locally partners with the MSU Extension.

Bringing the focus on healthy food: Erin shared that 1 in 3 kids are on track for diabetes, 1 in 2 kids of color are on track. 1 in 5 kids are hungry. 50% or more of their calories are consumed at school.

FoodCorps is involved locally at Traverse Heights and Suttons Bay, Traverse Heights has more than 80% that receive free or reduced lunches, 60% at Suttons Bay.

Erin’s daily work involved hands-on learning, sits with students to help educate and inform culture, works with the cafeteria to plan for healthy school meals. Example of “line design” and menu item names in order to help make meals appealing.

During fair weather the students have the opportunity to work in the green house. Once a month they do monthly taste tests. Erin shared a number of impactful stories of how students are excited about the opportunities to try new foods and try foods grown onsite. She also highlighted how schools are building connections with local farmers through the work of Groundworks.

FoodCorps has seen a 70% increase in students at Traverse Heights participation in trying new foods. Erin invited us to volunteer directly with gardens or events on campus or donating gardening or kitchen supplies. Donations of even $15 pays for the food in a lesson.
