RYE Rebounds Amelia and Adrian, Our year on Rotary Youth Exchange--A Brilliant Retrospective!

Amelia was an exchange student to Brazil, but lived essentially on the border of Argentina – 10 minutes away! Two languages, different traditions, i.e. naptime. She was there during a summer break so joined a class both as a junior when she arrived and a senior after break. Had a chance to visit many cultural sites in Brazil with 100 students from all of the world in the Rotary Youth Exchange. Carnaval is the largest tradition of the Brazil. Her city had the 4th best carnival in Brazil. Her school won the local completion for carnival that year. Volunteered with Interact while in Brazil . Experienced quinceanera parties. Host families were really different from each other. None spoke English so she spoke Portuguese. Visited many other cities while on exchange. She was here during the very controversial presidential election. Experienced all sorts of economic status throughout the city. Went to every event invited to as part of her experience. Both Amelia and Adrian ended their exchange with the Central States conference at Calvin College --- and was amazing experience. Thank you! Hope to be the Rotary representative to the United Nations.

Adrian was an exchange student to Thailand, near Mahasarakham University. Adrian showed maps of where he stayed and great photos of all the awesome experiences and places where he was able to visit. (Jennifer’s editorial is not going to do the slideshow justice.) Many landmark temples. Shared all the trips he was able to take with Rotary. Gorgeous mountain view photos. 27 students in his district on RYE. Southern trip was focused on water experience. Host families were a wonderful experience. It is tradition to pin photos on gown on graduation day. Met favorite Thai signer. Favorite trip was to Utiea (?). “Reclining Buddha” resides there. Favorite activity was learning to play the khene(?) or “can” an instrument unique to his region. RYLA camp was a highlight involving exchange students across the country and 200 Thai students who wanted to participate. Volunteered with a group learning English, involved with Buddhist practices, and with Rotary on Childs day. Lots of presentations were part of Adrian’s experience at the end. As well as, wonderful send-offs!

Both had an amazing grasp of their respective languages and could be summed up as banner exchanges!!
