NMLK – Jake shared how “The Crib” became known as The Crib in the 1930’s and how he and his friends and families formed a non-profit to save the lighthouse. It was built to warn ships about the Manitou passage at the end of the shoal.
The North Manitou Lighthouse was available for auction in 2016 and they started the long process for bidding. Once done with the auction process they began in July 2017 sharing their story and starting the process for restoration work.
The group Hired Mihm Enterprise as the contractor and work began in earnest in mid-2017 and 2018. Jake shared all the work required to prepare and repaint The Crib as well as the work done to restore the lantern and all windows. The Lantern Deck has been all fixed and sealed.
The intent and goal of the restored lighthouse is to provide the opportunity for experiencing history through tours and overnight opportunities. The most spectacular part of the experience is climbing to the top and seeing the expansive view.
Future plans include restoring the use of the sea door that will allow for a safer entree onto the island as opposed to using the ladder to climb onto the lighthouse. Thanks to Jake for sharing some fantastic photos and stories of the lighthouse and the restoration process!
