Nathan D. Griswold, ASLA, GRP, Founder and President of InhabitectTM shared about his firm which designs, creates and maintains “living architecture.” Nate created the company with dual goals to engage with the community and create better spaces. As a trained landscape architect and “greenroof certified,” Nate and his team work on all forms of living architecture: Green roofs, rain gardens, permeable pavement, rainwater harvesting, living wells, etc.  In addition to serving his clients, Nate does quite a bit of policy work with local city/county planners and other governmental organizations.

We had a chance to learn from him specifically about green roofs, natural shorelines, and rain gardens. He used examples of local work at the Uptown Condos, Cowell Cancer Center, Munson NW Tower A, Boyne City Hall, and Cherry Capital Foods to name a few. Our group was especially engaged around the topic of managing storm water onsite and low impact deterrents. Nate is passionate about naturally capturing water where it falls, “Water is a resource, not waste.” In regards to our shorelines, he shared the value of using the right plants to protect eroding shorelines and how to accomplish this on “high energy lakes” through bioengineering and partnerships with the DEQ.
