Program: Kevin Klein, TC Airport Director, spoke to us about updates to the TC Airport The airport has undergone a name change. They are no longer called Cherry Capital Airport because other airport officials didn't know where that was. The new name is "TVC Your Northern Michigan Connection". Now everyone knows where Traverse City is located. In 2017, a total of 476,767 passengers arrived in Traverse City. In 2011, there was 361,000. Currently American, Delta, and United serve TVC. There is no indication that Southwest will ever come to TVC because we do not have a strong commuter base. Kevin is trying to lure smaller airlines like Alligent, Spirit, Sun Country and Frontier to TVC. Why did TVC pursue Costco? In 1960 when the airport was granted access to build and there was property to the south tagged for an industrial park, just like the north side where aeropark is located. In 2013 Costco approached the airport and asked to open a store there. The only thing Costco looks to build is an identifying landmark to place stores. The airport was a good fit. They pay $170,000 a year in rent and currently have 12,300 members. It became a good fit. Inspiration: Tom left us with "Be the change in the world you want to see." |
