This annual opportunity to host students from Koka City (Shiga, Japan) in Traverse City for a week in January and then Traverse City students went on their weeklong trip in March. “Amazing” was the word most used to best describe the overall experience. The five students who went this year shared what they learned about school life and daily life. Cultural highlights included trying new foods, going to school at 7am and ending at 5pm, celebrating a birthday in Japan with families, seeing the Ninja museum, artist residency, chance to rent a kimono, dinner at a restaurant with a family, visiting a couple shrines. Important moments were figuring out how to communicate with little language in common, truly bonding with the families, the value of learning how to say thank you in the language of the country you are traveling. The students are currently raising funds to pay for the trip as a group in total, $14,000.
