Laura Galbraith, Venture North: Shared a brief history of how Venture North came to be. Started with a building sold in 2010 and a million dollars to deploy into the region to support economic growth. They provide additional financing to a bank loan. They receive funds from sources including USDA and HUD.
They are a CDFI – focused on bringing capital to low-income rural regions. Brings more capital to the region if we qualify and Venture North is one of about 200 such designated in the US. One of the first organizations to receive funding from Rotary. They cover ten counties in the region.
Loans range from $2,000-400,000. Staffing includes two underwriters and experiences volunteers to help make decision. Job creation is the major metric they look for in their decision-making.
For recipients, one of the first thing we do for new business owners is connect them to a CPA and attorneys. They also serve as connection to bankers and MEDC, etc. to explore grants. There’s so much out there that many folks don’t know what they qualify for or not. Anyone can come to us with an idea and then we’ll ask them to work with SCORE to create their business plan, etc.
Venture North is looking to grow their portfolio from 6M to 10M by 2020. We appreciate what they do for our community!
