Hatem Atallah, Frmr. Ambassador to the US from Tunisa, Lessons Learned from the Tunisian Uprisings. Amb. Atallah began by sharing a history of Tunisia and took us to today's state of the country and what brought them to a revolution in 2011. In his words, "It is important to understand who we are, to understand what is happening today." The Ambassador shared many insights into the people, culture, economics and politics of Tunisia -- and its unique place in the Arab world (those countries which speak classic Arabic).
Notable, was his explanation of the difference in their constitution from countries around them in regards to the value on the "Freedom of conscience." Defined loosely as the ability to choose for yourself how you will live individually -- for example choosing to follow a certain faith tradition, or not. They are moving from a group-focused society (valuing most what is good for the group) to elevating individual choice. Their culture is often the target of criticism from their neighboring countries and terrorist activities in the region have focused on hurting culture deemed too "open."
"When you embark on the construction of your country, you must know yourself first and not copy what others have done, nor even what the country has done before."
The Ambassador concluded by sharing that the main achievement gained through the uprisings and subsequent revolution, is the freedom to speak our minds on what is happening politically.
