Antrim County Baby Pantry is run by 80 volunteers. They help families that have children from birth to age 6. Over 476 children from 288 families were served in 2016 from Alba, Alden, Bellaire, Central lake, Fife Lake, Kalkaska, mancelona and Rapid City. Vouchers for 57 new cribs, mattresses and sheets and 48 new car seats were distributed. Exactly 63,259 diapers, 4,898 jars of baby food and 205 boxes of cereal were distributed.
Janine told several stories about families showing up in winter with kids who didn't have winter jackets. They applied for a $500 grant from Rotary to start a "Winter Wear" kit. 255 new winter jackets, 243 snow pants and 212 boots were distributed last year.
Over 80 volunteers contribute more than 5,5000 hours to the operation of the Antrim Baby Pantry, assisting on pantry days, making blankets, washing, mending and sorting clothes, attending meetings, purchasing food, clothing, cribs and diapers.
The Pantry is supported primarily by private donations from civic groups and a large group of friends who share our concern for child abuse in the area. Grants from NW Michigan United Way and Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians help defray the cost of cribs. Grants from Community Foundation Rotary Endowment, Rotary club of Traverse Bay Sunrise Foundation, and Elk Rapdis Lions Club support general operations FEMA funds were used for Food purchases.
