Announcements: October 17, 2017 is CLEAN UP DAY! Meet at ATM between 4:30 and 5:00pm October 22 from 1-4pm Camp Greilick is having an Open House Rotary Minute: Learn how to double your contribution to Rotary through Rotary Charities, Rotary District 6290. For example, $5500 was matched and matched again to allow Rotarians to supply 350 water filters to Honduras. After an audit they Rotarians found 100% were still in use and in good condition. The new District grant is to build latrines in February. Program: Marsha Smith from Rotary Charities Rotary began in Traverse City in 1920. Clarence Greilick was the third president from 1923-24. He had a goal of providing a place for children to go and enjoy the outdoors. This led to Rotary buying property in 1923 for a kids camp. It eventually turned into the Boy Scout Camp. So what about the girls? Camp Sakakawea was bought in 1955 for $8,900 and in 1970's oil was discovered on the Boy Scout property. Currently Rotary also owns East Creek Reserve since 1993, Cantebury Woods in 2000, Discovery Center and Discovery Pier in 2006. At the end of 2016 the Boy Scouts have decided to give up Camp Greilick and it was turned back over to Rotary Charities. Marsha explained that several interest letters were sent to non profits to see if they had any interest. Only 5 letters were return. Because Rotary Charities could not find a suitable match they enlisted Nick Killian, Sunrise Rotarian, to head the new camp Greilick Outdoor Recreation and Education Center. Nick was a boy scout at Camp Greilick and became part of the staff in 1991. This was a perfect match for both Rotary Charities and Nick Killian. Nick invited us to attend the Open House on October 22 from 1-4pm to learn more about what Greilick Outdoor Recreation and Education Center will be about. His vision is to have several groups come to the area to learn new skills and how to work together. Some groups such as the Haslett football team, GT Police, Boy Scouts, YMCA and others have shown interest. Inspiration: Something like this - No enterprise can exist on its own..... |
