Ryan Sterkenburg is originally from Grand Rapids where he met his wife at a young age. Their families vacationed “up north” and they were able to make the move when they established Gill’s Pier Vineyards in Leland 14 years ago. Ryan is currently the Executive Vice President at State Savings Bank and is active in many community foundations. Ryan is returning to our club after a previous membership between approximately 2005 and 2008. He has two children, is a Cornhusker, and enjoys golf, fishing, and gardening.
Jeff Buday is a charter member of our club and is a graduate of MSU in accounting. He began a career with Plante Moran in Traverse City primarily performing audits for health care organization and also taxes. He currently works at ABI mechanical, a family heating, cooling, and plumbing business established in 1977. Jeff was the President of our club in 2008-2009 and returned for a sophomore year in 2009-2010. Singing is an important hobby for Jeff and one of his groups is engaged to perform the National Anthem prior to the Tiger’s game on June 25.

Our speaker was Bill Cole, a retired math professor from Michigan State. Go Green!!! Mr. Cole spoke about the Reverend Peter Dougherty Society. The Reverend Peter Dougherty was the first permanent settler to the area.
In 1839, the Reverend Peter Dougherty was sent to the Grand Traverse Region by the Presbyterian Board of Foreign Mission to establish a church and school for the Native Americans who inhabited the area. In June of that year, Chief Ahgosa of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians, living on what is now Old Mission Peninsula, asked Dougherty to move his mission from the mouth of the Elk River in Elk Rapids to the present day site of Old Mission, Michigan, 18 miles from present day Traverse City.
