This year, our club had budgeted $2,500 to send someone to the Rotary International Conference.  Since we're not sending anyone this year, the board approved taking a chunk of that budgeted money and sliding it over to the Rotary District 6290 Conference, which will be held at the Park Place here in TC from May 1-3.  If anyone in our club would like to attend the conference, even if it's just for a day session, please let me know.  Our club will pay the full registration costs and meals for up to 10 members of our club.

If you're curious what the educational track for the conference looks like, check out the agenda.

Please consider taking us up on this.  The more members that we have attend the conference, the better it looks for our club.

All Rotarians are invited to join the “afterglow” party following the last Rotary Show on Saturday, April 25. The party will start right after the show around 9:30 pm at  Sorrelina’s on Park Street,  a block from the State Theatre. There will be a buffet which includes appetizers and dinner; the cost is $15 per person with a cash bar. Please let Becky Ewing know ASAP so we can get a count to the restaurant by Wednesday. The menu includes: bruschetta, assorted artisan flatbread pizzas, hummus, meat lasagna, spaghetti marinara (meatless), risotto tots and Caesar salad.

If you haven't made plans to attend yet . . . this year’s event will be held Wednesday, April, 22 to Saturday, April 25y.The pre-show begins at 7:30 pm, followed by the Mighty Rotary Chorus taking the stage at 8:00 pm. Tickets are $15 (reserved) or $10 (general admission). They can be purchased online via the State Theatre website.

We're excited to share the news that our Board of Directors has supported Membership Committee recommendation of Jack Kelly for membership in our club.

Please review and share any comments/concerns with Sean, Nancy, or any member of the club board or membership committee.

April 8 Guest Speaker:

Dave Kase introduced Assed Josephat, a Rotarian from Tanzania, to speak about the work they have going on to benefit abandoned children.

Assed flew three days to arrive in Traverse City. Functioning on little sleep but excited to address our club.He is from Tanzania, close to Lake Victoria and the Serengeti Wildlife Park. He is a Rotarian, and co-worker of David Kase, as country director for Christ Hope International. www.christshope.org

Assed has been the country director since 2005. He currently directs their ministry in Mwanza and the capital city of Dar es Salaam. He left his job in a UK dental office in 2008 to work for Christ Hope full time.

His work began with street children ages 7 to 12. Most who had been abandoned when a parent died of AIDS and the surviving parent would remarry and abandon their children. In a short period of time he was mentoring 28 kids. Ended up renting a 2 room home for 26 boys to live in at the same time. Two girls were placed in a foster home type arrangement.

After 3-4 years they experienced excellent results with many children becoming top performers in school. The program is expanded to more of a “foster parent” model and now serves +200 children 3-4 days per week.

Assed shared that Tanzania has a large and moderate Moslem population. Moslem’s and Christian children are served by his program and they co-exist without issue.
Tom Krause spontaneously “passed the hat” to raise some funds for Assed’s work.

April 15 Guest Speaker:

Kelly spoke about her time in Brazil. She works with the Traverse City native, Rick, who owns Rare Earth Hardwoods. The company is committed to the 3D Initiative, only using Dead, Dying, and Down trees. Kelly shared pictures of her time spent in Brazil and talked about the future plans for Rick’s property in Brazil. There are 89 lots up for sale and there is a project that also provides tours in their adventure park. Kelly is working on putting together a 10-day trip of Traverse City residents and anyone else that has interest to go on a trip later in 2015.
