At any time don't be surprised if a new member offers to bump a designated Bulletin Buddy for 50/50 sales or note-taking opportunities. We know you will happily step aside to enable their progress against new member orientation program (red badge).
If you wish to be added to the rotation please contact Nancy Thornton.
If a date you've been assigned is not convenient, we appreciate your initiative to exchange with a fellow Rotarian.
Rotaract is a service club open to all young men and woman ages 18 to 30 who are dedicated to community and international service. Quick Rotaract Facts:
Members meet bi-weekly
There are no mandated Rotary dues; each club can set its own policy
They are sponsored by one or more Rotary clubs
All Rotarians are encouraged to support the Rotaract club members and their activities
Can a Rotarian be member of both? Assuming they are between 18 and 30, that's entirely up to the individual.
The proposed Traverse City club is to be based on professional development and social interaction.

Rotary clubs sponsor the finest young leaders in their communities. Students who have completed their high school junior or senior year, exchange students, and students who have completed their college freshman year are offered the opportunity to participate in this special conference. Ideal candidates are outstanding student leaders who are a credit to their schools and communities. They are hungry for knowledge, willing to meet new friends, and eager to engage in a program that will have a lasting effect on their lives. They are, simply, the leadership of the future!
“This Leadership Conference is designed for vigorous young men and women with something above their shoulders – ready, willing, and able to use their brain power and who desire to be somebody in the world of leadership.” -C.W. Bemer, LLC Founder

Dana Venhuizen is the Youth Advisor for Northwest Michigan Works! and the liaison for the Beaver Island Lighthouse School that serves the 10 county Northern Michigan region. The school is a residential alternative high school for students who are referred by local courts, school districts and probation officers. They are not court ordered, but volunteer to attend this school. Typically 30 students attend per semester. There are two semesters per year: fall and spring, with an additional summer camp. The focus of the school is varied, ranging from preparation for employment and social skills to mental and physical health. The students typically define the school as “their community, their family, and their home”. When in session, students work 7 days a week from 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. for 21-day stretches before they are allowed a break to go home for a visit. In addition to school works, the students do everything for the school – cooking, cleaning, and general maintenance. The school is accredited through the Charlevoix Public School System.
The Lighthouse School has been the recipient of our Backpack for Kids for two years. Dana reported that some of the students had never owned a backpack before, much less a new backpack filled with school supplies!
Volunteers are needed in certain capacities: motivational guest speakers, potential employers to talk about job skills and opportunities. If interested, contact Dana through Jane.
